Catalonia, Navarra and the Basque Country stand out as the Autonomous Communities with the better performance universities in Spainaccording to the latest edition of the ranking prepared by the Knowledge and Development Foundation (CYD). This report, a key tool for guiding students who face this week at University Access Test (PAU)allows to compare 3,452 degrees of 82 universities -48 public and 34 private- in thirty areas of knowledge.
Among the ten universities better positioned by their performance in teaching and research isUtónoma de Barcelona, the University of Navarra, the Carlos III of Madrid, the Autonomous of Madrid, the University of Barcelona, the Pontifical Comillas, the University of Deusto, La Pompeu Fabra, La Rovira I Virgili and the Ramon Llull.
By communities, Navarra, Catalonia, Basque Country and Madrid concentrate the best global results. In the research area, in addition to Navarra, Cantabria stands out. In knowledge transfer, the Valencian Community stands out, while in International Orientation Leadan Navarra, Cataluña and Madrid. As for the Contribution to regional development, lead the Valencia list, Catalonia and the Basque Country, followed by Aragon, Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.
Performance by specific dimensions
- Teaching and Learning: Lead the Pontifical of Comillas, the University of Navarra and the Pontifical of Salamanca.
- Research: Valencia – Studio General, Cantabria, Lleida, Autonomous of Barcelona, Navarra, Vigo and Pompeu Fabra stand out.
- Knowledge transfer: The autonomous of Barcelona and the Rovira I Virgili are located, followed by Pompeu Fabra and Navarra.
- International orientation: Navarra leads this dimension, followed by Carlos III of Madrid, Ramon Llull, Autonomous of Barcelona and Pontificia Comillas.
- Contribution to regional development: The Basque Country stands out, followed by Valencia – Study General, Rovira I Virgili, La Laguna, Miguel Hernández de Elche, Barcelona and Catholic of Valencia San Vicente Mártir.
Stem: good performance but low female presence
Although women represent 56.83 % of university students, their presence in Stem (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) is still reduced, with only 28 % of professors. In careers such as computer engineering (17 %), mechanical engineering (18.4 %) or electrical engineering/energy (19.5 %), the proportion of students is very lowalthough they are a majority in biology (63.5 %), chemistry (54.4 %) and architecture (52.2 %), although their presence decreases in the highest academic levels.
