The Greek government has decided to temporarily suspend the basketball league after chaos generated in the second game of the final “playoff” between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos. Before, during and after the game there was everything: threats, fights and insults of fans and relatives of club leaders.
“The third game of the final that should be held on Wednesday between the Panathinaikos and the Olympiacos at the Oaka stadium is suspended,” said government spokesman, Pavlos Mariakis. According to Mariakis, that same day The president of the Panathinaikos, dimitris giannakopulosy The presidents of Olympiacos, the Panayotis and Yorgos Angelópulos brothersthey will meet with Sports Minister Yannis Vrutsis, “to commit to end this situation.” If the dialogue does not bear fruit, as warned, “this year’s league will definitely be suspended.”
It all started when a few minutes before the second encounter of the final began, the president of Panathinaikos entered the Olympiac pavilion. Several local fans began shouting slogans in which they rudely insulted giannakopulos and their 18 -year -old daughter, as can be found in videos published by the Greek portal Sport24.gr.
The president of the Panathinaikos then approached the referees of the party to ask them to register the insults officially and demand that the fans of Olympiacos be called to order. However, a few seconds later, already outside of himself, Giannakopulos made a comb and other rude gestures aimed at fans, so the referees expelled him from the court. For at least half an hour, the president of the Panathiniakos was in the inner hall between the court and the dressing rooms struggling with police officers that prevented him from entering the playing field again.
“Arrest me or let me in,” Giannakopulos shouted while struggling with the agents, as seen in several videos he published himself in his official Instagram account.
After the end of the game, in which Olympiacos won 91-83 and tied the playoff series, Yorgos Angelopulos pointed out before the press that “the president of the Panathinaikos is a vomit.” “What happened has never been seen in the history of Greek sport,” he said. Another responsible for Olympiacos said that Giannakopulos grabbed him on the court and shouted: “Go and tell Yorgos (Angelopulos) that I will rape her daughter in front of him.”
After this incident and while the game was played, El Pirao club filed a lawsuit against the president of the Panathinaikos. In a video of a stadium security camera you can see the entrepreneur running along with their security people to the garage before entering two black cars and getting away despite the attempts of some agents to stop them. According to the SKAI station, a search and capture order against the president of the Panathinaikos, winner of the Euroleague last year is currently in force.
The party also passed in a tense atmosphere and in the fourth period the technician of Panathinaikos, the Turk Ergin Ataman, was expelled after complaining to the referees that the public insulted his native country. “They insulted Turkey and Giannakopulos’ family. Those who did are bastards,” said the coach in statements to the Greek press after the party.
